It accumulates as shots are taken, assigning each shot its probability of going in. A team with a live xG of 1.8 but a score of 0-0 has been creating excellent chances and getting unlucky. They're likely to score soon. A team with a live xG of 0.3 but a score of 1-0 has been fortunate — their lead is fragile. Watch for the gap between live xG and the actual score. When a team's xG significantly exceeds their goals, they're due. When their goals significantly exceed their xG, they're living on borrowed time. ## Shots on Target Shots on target is a cruder metric than xG but still useful in real time. A team with 8 shots on target to their opponent's 1 is creating sustained pressure that's likely to eventually break through. The caveat: shots on target doesn't distinguish between a tap-in and a speculative effort. A team with 8 shots on target from outside the box is in a different position to one with 8 shots on target from inside the six-yard box. ## Dangerous Attacks "Dangerous attacks" counts attacking moves that reach the final third with genuine threat. It's a better proxy for sustained pressure than possession percentage. A team with 35 dangerous attacks to their opponent's 8 is dominating the match in a meaningful way, regardless of what the score says. ## Possession Possession is the most overrated live statistic. Teams can have 70% possession and be losing — if they're passing sideways in their own half while the opponent hits them on the counter. Possession is only meaningful when combined with other stats. High possession + high shots on target + high dangerous attacks = genuine dominance. High possession + low shots + low dangerous attacks = sterile dominance that's unlikely to produce goals. ## Reading the Match Danger Meter GoalVio's Match Danger Meter visualises the flow of the match — which team is currently applying pressure, how sustained that pressure is, and whether it's translating into genuine chances. The meter updates in real time based on attacking moves, shots, and dangerous attacks. A team whose bar is consistently high is in a dangerous period. A team whose bar is flat has been quiet. The most useful signal is a sudden spike in the danger meter for a team that's been quiet. It often precedes a goal — the team has shifted their approach and is now creating genuine threat. ## The Final 20 Minutes The final 20 minutes are when live stats become most predictive. Teams chasing a result commit more players forward, creating more chances for both sides. **Substitutions.** A team bringing on an extra attacker is signalling intent. Their xG is likely to increase. **Set pieces.** Teams under pressure often concede set pieces as they commit forward.
